We connected with Jim Metzker to learn more about Dorothea's Shoppe at 801 Sutter Street.
What is Dorothea's Shoppe, how would you describe it to a friend?
Dorothea’s Shoppe is truly a unique place. It has been on Sutter Street in Folsom, CA for over 50 years in the exact same location!
Christmas has always been a part of the inventory but more importantly, Dorothea’s has always carried the unique items that you cannot find elsewhere.
Year after year, many families come here to look for that significant ornament to represent someone special in their lives.
Why did you start the business?
Dorothea's was in the process of being sold in late 2013. My wife, Sherri, was a long time shopper and hated to set the store close, so we purchased it.
What do you hope to accomplish?
We hope to continue bringing the joy of Christmas year round to the families of Folsom as well as all over the world.
What's something you wish people knew about your business?
We specialize in the unique, hard to find ornament that is meaningful to someone.
What is a common question you get or what is your most popular product or service?
Do you have ornaments that are personalized?
We don't have them pre-personalized (as so many people spell their kids names differently), but we do customize everything.
What's the biggest compliment you've received?
That we make people smile when they come into the store.
We love that we bring happiness to individuals and families every time they enter our store.
Are you involved with or do you support any local nonprofits or community organizations?
What is your favorite part about being in the Folsom Historic District?
I love the rich history of Folsom.
As a board member for the museum, I am privileged to help make decisions regarding exhibits, events, fundraisers, etc.
I love creating excitement in the community.
Are you a member of the chamber or any other networking organizations?
I am a member of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce as well as the other boards I have listed above.
Do you have any upcoming events, specials or new products/services that people should know about?
We are always busy during the holiday season.
Outside of the holidays, we run sales in the off season. March, for the commemoration of purchasing the store, and July, for the traditional Christmas in July.
